The name for a post office that Washington kept turning down
Around the turn of the century, T. C. Schnebly wanted a post office for his home in the red rock country of northern Arizona. He sent Washington two names, Oak Creek Crossing and Schnebly Station. Neither was accepted. According to the Sedona Heritage Museum, the Postmaster General of the day had a prejudice for one-word names [1]. Schnebly's brother Ellsworth asked, "Why don't you name it after your wife?" [1]. She was Sedona Miller, born in Missouri in 1877. Her mother, Amanda, had simply thought up the name because it sounded pretty [1]. Washington approved it on 26 June 1902 [2]. The place then had 55 residents [3]. The orange formation on the Arizona mug (2) sits in a frame labelled RED ROCK SEDONA, and the name on that label belonged to a woman first.
The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.

Collector notes
- The inside is orange-brown, and the outside art uses red line work with orange and yellow fills, so it reads warmer than the other Arizona mugs in the Been There and Discovery series.
- Our checklist lists more than one Been There Arizona mug. This page covers the one in our photo, and the Red Rock Sedona label is the quickest way to match a listing to it.
