About the Been There Series
What is the Been There Series?
The Been There Series is a line of Starbucks souvenir mugs with whimsical icons drawn by hand. Starbucks calls it the most recent of its collector series before the Discovery Series [1]. Each ceramic mug holds 14 ounces, the same as the You Are Here mug it replaced [3].
When did it launch?
A collectors' guide dates the switch from the 2013 You Are Here Series to Been There to June 2018 in the U.S. and Canada [2]. A travel blog saw the mugs in some U.S. stores from the end of March 2018 [3], and a Starbucks customer-care representative quoted by a radio station said it launched in the spring 2018 promotion [4]. The Disney parks got theirs in April 2019 [5]. We have not found an official Starbucks launch date.
How is a Been There mug different from You Are Here and Discovery?
The art is the first clue: Been There is hand-drawn, while Starbucks says each Discovery design sits on a green dot, shows people doing something local and hides a to-go cup [1]. At Disneyland, WDWNT noted the Been There mug focused on multiple aspects of the park rather than just one [19]. The Disney World mugs came in a Pin Drop Collection box [6].
Will Been There mugs stack with Discovery mugs?
Yes. Starbucks says customers liked stacking the Been There mugs, so designers kept the dimensions of the Discovery mugs unchanged [1]. See our Discovery checklist for the newer series.
Is the Been There Series discontinued?
Dexerto reported in April 2024 that Starbucks was scrapping it for the Discovery Series [7], and a collectors' guide calls Discovery its official successor [2]. We have not found a Starbucks statement ending the series, so we do not label any particular mug retired. In Japan, SoraNews24 reports that the 2026 Discovery collection replaces Been There [8].
How much did Been There mugs cost?
We found no price on a Starbucks page. At Walt Disney World in April 2019 the Been There mugs were $19.99, against $16.99 for You Are Here [5], and the mini mug ornaments that followed in July 2019 were $14.99 [9]. Resale prices vary by place, version and seller.
Are there error mugs or second versions?
A collector site reports several. An early Boston mug printed "Boston Commons" before a corrected "Boston Common"; the Montana mug printed "Bitteroot" and was pulled after a short time in stores; the first Mississippi mug was recalled and replaced; and the second Texas mug capitalises "Colorado River" [10]. The same site says the second Alabama mug dropped the planes and the "cotton state" nickname and added a bear and a giant butterfly [10]. If a listing says "v1" or "v2", look for those details.
Are there Been There university mugs?
Yes. Rutgers calls its 2022 mug part of a Campus Collection within the Been There series and says it was among the first colleges approached [11], and NC State says it is one of only 30 universities in that collection [12]. Campus mugs are not always sold only on campus: Howard University's was sold at 14 locations around the Washington, D.C. area, one of them the campus bookstore, and Howard is described as the first school in a newer "Discovery Campus" collection [13]. So campus mugs now sit under two series names.
What other Been There lines exist?
Disney's parks had their own Been There mugs from April 2019 [5], with Star Wars editions at Downtown Disney in May 2022 (Naboo, Ahch-To and Nevarro at $22.99) [14]. Norwegian Cruise Line sold one Been There mug per ship, available only on that ship [15]. Starbucks Japan's first Been There set, on October 20, 2021, had mugs for 19 prefectures and regions at 1,980 yen [16].
Are there fake Been There mugs?
We have not found a documented counterfeit Been There mug. eBay bans counterfeit items and tells sellers to list an item only if they are certain it is genuine [17], and Amazon lists fakes among its prohibited products [18]. When buying, compare the seller's own photos with ours.
How many are there?
Starbucks has not published a total. This checklist lists 492 Been There Series mugs we know of and has a photo page for 22 of them.
