The keeper who slept with a lantern at her headboard
At ninety-four, Kathleen Moore remembered how she slept as keeper of a Connecticut lighthouse: on calm nights, at home, with a lit lantern hanging at her headboard and her face turned so she could watch the tower's light shine on the wall [1]. The tower stood forty rods from the house, and to reach it she crossed two planks that lay under four feet of water in a storm [1]. She had started at twelve, helping her father, Stephen Moore, whose poor health soon left him unable to tend the Fayerweather Island light himself [1]. He kept the official title for fifty-four years, until he died in 1871 at ninety-eight [1]. Her lamps went out if they were not refilled through the night, so on windy nights she stayed in the tower until morning [1]. According to Lighthouse Friends, she was credited with saving twenty-one lives [1][2]. The lighthouse on the Connecticut mug (3) may be a light like hers.
The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.

Collector notes
- The blue and orange artwork is spread evenly, with a large blue shape lettered Long Island Sound at the lower middle that makes the mug easy to spot.
- The photo is taken on a plain cardboard base, so the rim and inside are not clearly shown; do not rely on this photo for the inside colour.
