The year the Family Island Regatta was cancelled for the first time
In April 2020, with the country shut and inter-island travel stopped, the committee of the National Family Island Regatta cancelled it for the first time in its 67 years [1]. More than 70 boats were due to race in Elizabeth Harbour at George Town [2]. Commodore Danny Strachan said Buzzy Rolle had built three new boats for the E class there, and Andros had built three more [3]. The races began in 1954, when a small group of Bahamian and American yachtsmen conceived a regatta for Bahamian working sailing craft, according to a 2015 speech by the minister of agriculture and marine resources, who cited the historian Howland Bottomley [4]. Deputy Prime Minister Philip Davis said the founders felt it would improve the working fleets, many of them in disrepair [5]. Decades later, builders were still launching new boats to race. The two blue-sailed boats on the Bahamas mug (4) may be a sloop like those.
The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.
What's on the mug
- 1Bahamas lettering
Bahamas in dark teal capitals and lower case runs across the top of the front.
- 2Conch shell
A large pale conch shell with an orange lip fills the middle of the front.
- 3Wave
A curling wave in teal and pale blue sits below the shell.
- 4Sailboats
Two sailboats with blue sails sail below an orange sun at the right.
- 5Orange hibiscus flowers
Orange flowers with a leafy sprig sit at the left of the shell.
- 6Goggles Side view
Round orange swim goggles with blue lenses sit near the top.
- 7Lighthouse Side view
A white lighthouse with a blue roof stands on a small island.
- 8Whale Side view
A large whale in pale green and blue fills the left of this side.
- 9Folded map Back view
An orange and blue folded map of islands is the largest drawing on this side.
- 10Beach umbrella Back view
An orange and white umbrella stands on a beach with a towel.
- 11Horse-drawn carriage Back view
A horse and a blue carriage with an orange top stand beside the handle.
- 12Fishing rod and marlin Back view
A fishing rod and reel and a marlin with a long bill run across the top.
The three photos show the front, one side and the back. The underside and the inside base are not shown.
Collector notes
- The inside is a bright blue that matches the sea colours outside, and the handle is plain cream, so the lettering side is easy to tell from the STARBUCKS side.
- The STARBUCKS wordmark runs down the back next to the handle, and the folded orange map and the horse-drawn carriage sit on that side, away from the Bahamas lettering.
Before you buy
The inside is bright blue and the handle is plain cream, so the lettering side is easy to tell from the STARBUCKS side. The photos do not show the underside or the inside base. The Bahamas also appears in the Discovery and Icon series, so check the series name before you order.
