The riot that took Junkanoo off Bay Street for six years
On 1 June 1942, Black men marched on the government offices in Nassau after learning that American workers on a wartime building project were making double their pay [1]. Five men died in the Burma Road riots [2]. Afterward the Junkanoo parade was banned from Bay Street, and it stayed away for six years [1]. According to The Tribune, which backed the fight, the man who won it was A. B. Malcolm, who owned a chain of gas stations and let the groups meet at his Bay Street garage to plan each year's parade [3]. Junkanoo returned on New Year's Day 1948 [1]. In 2023 UNESCO added it to its intangible heritage list and described towering costumes of cardboard and crepe paper as the art of making beauty out of junk [4]. The costumed dancer on the Bahamas mug (5) may be one of the people who rush on Bay Street.
The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.

Collector notes
- The box repeats DISCOVERY SERIES three times, in English and then in French as SERIE DISCOVERY and SÉRIE DISCOVERY, so the box print differs from the English-only boxes.
- The costumed dancer sits at the left of the Front view and again at the centre of the Side view, so the Side photo shows the same figure up close next to a bank of yellow flowers.
Before you buy
The box repeats the series name three times, in English and then in French (SERIE DISCOVERY and SÉRIE DISCOVERY), which sets it apart from the English-only boxes. The photos do not show the back or the area behind the handle. The Bahamas also appears in the Been There and Icon series, so check the series name before you order.
