Starbucks Discovery Series mugs: complete checklist

What is the Discovery Series?

The Discovery Series is Starbucks' collector line of mugs, cold cups, tumblers and totes that tells the story of each place through its landmarks, food, local activities and people. Starbucks announced it on April 9, 2024 as a spring launch and described the designs as colourful, overlapping icons, "a new evolution" of its collector mugs [1].

When and where did it launch?

Starbucks said it would start in more than 20 U.S. cities, states and locations and then expand across the U.S., Canada and the world over the next few years [2]. Disney's parks were ahead of the announcement: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Disney California Adventure mugs were on sale in January 2024 [3][10]. In Canada the series arrived that summer with Niagara Falls and Canada mugs, and nearly 30 more Canadian locations were due the same year [4][5]. Mexico followed on February 17, 2026 with 24 destinations [6], and Japan in July 2026 with 19 regions plus a Japan design [7].

How can I recognise a Discovery Series mug?

Starbucks says a green dot sits at the centre of each design as the backdrop for the place name, written in a hand-drawn typeface. It also calls Discovery the first series in its global collection to put people on the mug, each doing something local, and says a Starbucks to-go cup is hidden in every design [1]. The mug itself is 14-ounce ceramic.

Where is the hidden cup?

Starbucks does not say. Its launch story says one is hidden in each design and does not say where [1]. Our hidden-cup guide shows where it sits on the mugs where we have found it in our own photos, with a close-up of each.

How big is it, and will it stack?

The ceramic mug holds 14 ounces. Starbucks says the designers kept the Discovery mug's dimensions unchanged from the Been There mug because collectors like to stack them [1]. We have not found a Starbucks care label for the regular store mugs; Disney Store lists its Star Wars Discovery mug as dishwasher and microwave safe, about 3.5 inches high and 6 wide with the handle [8].

How much does a Discovery mug cost?

Dexerto reported $25 a mug at the U.S. launch in April 2024 [9]. Disney's park mugs launched at $24.99 [10], and Disney Store lists its Star Wars Discovery mugs at the same price [8]. We found no price on a Starbucks page, so check the store or the Starbucks app. Resale prices on sites such as eBay depend on the place, the edition and the seller.

What else is in the Discovery Series?

All participating stores carry the 14-ounce mug. Select stores also sell a 24-ounce cold cup, a 16-ounce stainless steel tumbler and a packable travel tote, and licensed stores (in grocery stores, airports, retailers and hospitals) may carry an exclusive 2-ounce demitasse ornament [1]. Partner lines use the same name: Disney's parks have a mug for each park, and Starbucks says the Wicked mugs (Munchkinland, Emerald City, Shiz University) were sold only at Universal theme parks in the U.S. [11]. Is the Discovery Series discontinued?

Not according to anything we found. Starbucks said in 2024 that the series would keep growing [2], and we found no Starbucks announcement ending it or retiring any Discovery mug. The Been There Series it followed is a different case: Dexerto reported in April 2024 that Starbucks was scrapping it [9], while Starbucks calls it only "the most recent" of its earlier series [1]. We have not seen an official end date for Been There, so we do not call any mug retired.

What came before it?

Starbucks traces its collector mugs back to the City Mug Collector Series (1994), followed by the Skyline Series (2002), City Scenes (2004), Architecture (2006) and the Global Series (2008), and the Been There Series came last [1]. See our Been There checklist to compare the two.

Are there fake Discovery mugs?

We have not found a documented counterfeit Discovery mug. eBay bans counterfeit items and tells sellers to list an item only if they are certain it is genuine [12], and Amazon lists fakes among its prohibited products [13]. When buying, compare the seller's own photos with ours.

How many are there?

Starbucks has not published a total. This checklist lists 216 Discovery Series mugs we know of and has a photo page that decodes what is drawn on the mug for 113 of them.
