The barber whose town the interstate forgot
On September 22, 1978, the cars stopped coming through Seligman, Arizona. For six years the town had enjoyed about 9,000 of them a day on Route 66, and barber Angel Delgadillo had cut hair in the middle of it [1]. That day the new Interstate 40 opened two miles to the south [1]. "Everybody just forgot about us," Delgadillo later told the Associated Press [2]. He did not leave. On February 18, 1987, he called a meeting at the Copper Cart restaurant, and the group that formed there became the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona [1]. That November the state christened U.S. 66 from Seligman to Kingman "Historic Route 66" [1]. According to the Associated Press, Delgadillo and his town were the inspiration for the animated film Cars [2]. The two cars with eyes in their windshields on the California Adventure mug (5) may be from that film.
The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.

A tall pale teal tower with a clock and a spire rises at the right of the lettering.
- 4Theatre marquee
A building with a white marquee and red stripes stands below the tower.
- 5Cartoon cars
A red car and a teal car with eyes in their windshields sit side by side at the bottom.
- 6Red rock
Swooping red rock shapes with white streaks run across the lower left.
- 7Green foliage
Teal and green leaves and clouds fill the upper left.
The photo shows one side of the mug, standing on its box. The back and the area behind the handle are out of view.
Collector notes
- The right side holds the clock tower and the marquee building, and part of the design continues behind the handle, so a front-only photo does not show the whole scene.
- The box in the background carries the DISCOVERY wording, so a seller who shows the box is showing the Discovery Series packaging.
