The 2007 clause that kept a Kansas City jazz club open to 6 a.m.
In 2007, a change in Missouri’s alcohol laws threatened a Kansas City club’s custom of serving all night, according to Missouri Life [1]. The club was the Mutual Musicians Foundation on Highland Avenue, which began as a black musicians’ union, Local 627 [2]. Its jam sessions open around 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, when the bars around town are closing [3]. State law let a licensed bar apply for a permit to stay open until 3 a.m. [4]. The legislature added a clause. It names no club. It covers a tax-exempt entity in a National Historic Landmark, which may apply for a license to stay open until 6 a.m. [5][6]. The governor signed the bill on 13 July 2007 [7]. The street signs on the Kansas City mug (4) mark the Eighteenth and Vine district where the club stands [2].
The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.
