The company that bought a swamp to drain it

On 1 January 1891, a company bought the Okefenokee Swamp, which the Georgia legislature had authorized the governor to sell two years earlier [1]. Its plan was to drain it [1]. According to the Charlton County Historical Society, a group of Atlanta businessmen led by Captain Henry Jackson tried to dig a canal through Trail Ridge toward the St. Marys River, gave up after three years, and the project became known as Jackson's Folly [2]. Then the company turned to what grew there. It built a sawmill, bought steamboats and steam logging equipment, and set out to raise money by harvesting cypress, but both ventures collapsed in 1897 [1]. Charles Hebard and his sons bought the property in 1901 and, learning from those mistakes, studied the timber and logged the cypress by railroad [1]. In 1937 the federal government purchased the Hebard Lumber Company property, and Roosevelt created the wildlife refuge there [1]. The two pale cypress trees standing in water on the Georgia mug (5) may be Okefenokee's.

The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.

    Peanut

A pale blue peanut shell with a mesh pattern lies below the peach.

  4. 4
    State flag

A flag with blue and white bands and a coat of arms in a square canton waves at the lower right.

  5. 5

Collector notes

  • The inside of this mug is deep blue, which shows at the rim, and the artwork is drawn in blues with orange touches on the peach, the small flower and the ribbon.
  • The peach, the peanut and the flag all sit on the front, so a photo from the handle side misses them. Our Discovery Series Georgia mug is a different design with a dark green circle and a red and green palette.
