The peach that had no name until a college friend visited
In 1875 a visitor named Mrs. L. E. Veal, a college friend of Mrs. Rumph's, came to Willow Lake in Georgia, and her host kept bringing out peaches. Samuel Rumph showed her one specimen after another. The last had yellow flesh and a crimson blush. "It has no name," he said. "I want you to name it." According to a University of Georgia history, she told him to honor his wife, Clara Elberta, and call it Elberta [1]. That same year Rumph packed some of the fruit in crates and sent it to New York with no ice at all. It arrived in good condition and sold for fifteen dollars a bushel [1]. He later developed a refrigerated rail car, which the Georgia Encyclopedia says let growers ship rapidly to northern markets [2]. Elberta stayed the state's leading peach until 1960 [2]. The pink-and-orange peach on the Georgia mug (2) may be an Elberta.
The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.

Together the three photos show most of the outside of the mug; the strip directly opposite the handle may be only partly visible.
Collector notes
- The design leans heavily on red and green, with the red fish, the red building and the red bird at the left all in one palette, which separates it from the blue-lettered Brooklyn mug.
- The pond, the willow and the red bird sit at the far left and the flowers and the red building at the right, so a one-sided seller photo misses half of the scene.
Before you buy
The Been There series also carries Georgia, so check the series name on the base before buying. The photos show most of the outside of this mug, but the strip opposite the handle may be only partly visible.
