The ten minutes between two earthquakes in Antigua

On 29 July 1773, at 3:40 in the afternoon, the ground shook under Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, the colonial capital now called Antigua [1]. It was a small tremor, yet the Dominican friar Felipe Cadena, who wrote an account of the disaster, thought it important for saving lives [2]. The second shock came ten minutes after the first had stopped, and buildings began to split and fall the moment the ground moved [3][4]. Dust darkened the air, and people ran back into the very dangers they were fleeing [5]. He could not say how many died, only that it was many; the bodies counted came to 123, not including the injured [6][7]. The ruined churches could not even be entered to bury them [8]. On 4 and 5 August the president called a general meeting, and it agreed the capital had to move [9][10]. The church facade on the Antigua Guatemala mug (4) may stand for the temples Cadena saw in ruins.

The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.
