The Delaware deputy who spoke of a foreign ally, then signed

On 30 May 1787, a delegate to the Convention asked the room to put off a vote. Delaware's deputies, he reminded it, were restrained by their commission from assenting to any change of the rule of suffrage [1]. If one was made, it might become their duty to retire from the Convention [2]. The clause was postponed [3]. A month later the fight over votes had not ended. Gunning Bedford of Delaware told the floor, in Madison's notes, that if the large states dissolved the Confederation, the small ones "will find some foreign ally of more honor and good faith" [4]. King answered that, whatever his distress, he would never court relief from a foreign power [5]. Bedford stayed all the same, and his name is on the Constitution [6]. That December, Delaware's own convention met at Dover and ratified it, and Bedford's signature is on that too [7][8]. The yellow capitals on the Delaware mug (1) spell the state that sent him.

The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.

What's on the mug

  7. 7

  8. 8

  11. 11
    Pianist Back view

A figure sits at a black grand piano with a purple lid.

The inside wall is not visible in the photos. The photos are low resolution, so fine print is unreadable. Release year, SKU and any retirement status are not confirmed.

Collector notes

  • The three photos are small and soft, so small details such as the desserts and the round shell on the Back are hard to name from the images alone.
  • The musician and the purple blossoms sit on the Side view and the pianist and the bridge on the Back, so the Front photo shows only the dolphins, the blossoms and the desserts.

Before you buy

The photos are low resolution and show no inside wall, so the inside colour and any fine print are not confirmed. The front shows the dolphins, blossoms and desserts, while the musician and the bridge are on the other two sides. A Delaware mug also exists in the Been There series, so confirm the series before you buy.
