The Milwaukee father who sent a motorcycle to the backyard

Feeling somewhat pestered by a project in the house, William C. Davidson of Milwaukee asked the young men behind it to move it to the backyard, according to the Harley-Davidson Museum [1]. The project was a motorcycle. William Harley and Arthur Davidson had met as teenagers in the 1890s, and in 1903 they put up a wooden shed there, ten feet by fifteen [1]. They later sold their first machine out of it to a friend, Henry Meyer [1]. Arthur had written to his brother Walter, a railroad machinist in Kansas, to come home. Walter was critical of the machine and set to work improving it [1]. For money to grow, the group borrowed $170 from a beekeeping relative rather than a bank [1]. The first year brought three motorcycles sold. Within ten years the company stood at just under 13,000 vehicles [1]. The rider leaning on a motorcycle on the Wisconsin mug (6) may be one of that company's machines.

The mug does not label its drawings, so connecting this one to the story is our reading.

What's on the mug

    Lettering

WISCONSIN in yellow-orange capitals across the middle of a dark green circle.

  2. 2
    Cranberries

A cluster of dark red berries with teal leaves hangs at the top of the circle.

  3. 3
    Spotted cow

A yellow cow with teal spots leans in from the right to nibble the berries.

  4. 4
    Violet

A purple violet with a white centre sits just right of the lettering.

  5. 5
    Cheese wedges

Yellow cheese wedges and curds sit on a teal board below the circle.

  6. 6
    Motorcyclist

A rider in a helmet and yellow jacket leans on a motorcycle at the far left.

  7. 7
    Fenced stadium

A yellow-and-black stadium-style building with a fence along its front sits at the lower right.

The photo shows one side of the mug. The back and the area behind the handle are out of view.

Collector notes

  • The inside of this mug is teal blue, which shows at the rim in the photo.
  • The cow, the violet and the stadium cluster at the right near the handle while the motorcyclist rides at the far left edge, so a photo from the right misses the rider.

Before you buy

The inside of this mug is teal blue. The rider stands at the far left edge, while the cow, the violet and the stadium crowd the right near the handle, so a photo taken from the right will not show him. Wisconsin also has a mug in the Been There series, so check the series name before you buy.
